Susan Brannock, 69, of Cape Canaveral, Florida passed away on June 14, 2024, after several years of battling cancer. Susan spent her last month surrounded by her loving family in Johnson City, Tennessee.
Susan was born on October 29, 1954, to the late Daphne and John Landry. She grew up in Potomac, Maryland riding her horse Snowflake, catching the surf during Ocean City summers, and watching Bonanza every Sunday with her family. She had a strong love of salt water, its taffy, and cruising the Ocean City boardwalk with her friends. She graduated from Winston Churchill High School and later followed the surf to Florida where she enrolled in college.
Susan was a hippy beach girl with a love for adventure. In addition to surfing, she enjoyed all life had to offer and spent time doing things like playing the guitar, horseback riding, fishing, hang-gliding, white-water rafting, creating art, and cooking gourmet food. Susan’s love of food led her to a career in the restaurant industry where she eventually became a personal chef. Additionally, she followed other entrepreneurial passions, having businesses where she rented bounce houses and sold gourmet dog treats. It is no surprise that Susan found work where she cared for others and brought the “good times”. However, Susan would say her true life’s work was raising her two daughters, Mary and Shelley. Susan was a fierce supporter of her children and her love for them was boundless.
Once retired, she moved to Cape Canaveral, Florida, where her brothers and sisters soon followed. She would spend her time cruising the beach on her electric bike, playing a mean game of Scrabble, enjoying family beach days and outings, doting on her grandsons, grandnieces, and nephews, and catching the sun.
Susan lit up any room she entered, with her kind smile, bubbly personality, and bright and vibrant clothing. She was someone who radiated light and loved giving. She truly understood how to live in the moment, embrace abundance in any situation, and enjoy what life presented. In this, she was also a fearless doer, if she wanted something done, she would figure out how to make it happen - never one to back away from a challenge or fun opportunity. Susan was successful in this, she was a business owner, and even enjoyed pursuing manual work like tiling her North Carolina home, helping paint her sister’s restaurant, and building koi ponds and fences. She was an incredibly strong (physically and mentally) and independent person. This strength led her to pursue a life where she did exactly what she wanted. It brings us solace to know that Susan didn’t wait and that she always “went for it”. Even when Susan was sick, she still found a way to strum a guitar, take a dip in the ocean, make art, sing, give, and spend cherished quality time with her family. We have deep gratitude for her love and life lessons, and we hold tremendous sorrow for her passing - she will be greatly missed.
Susan was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Joanne Landry. Her children survive her, Shelley Carroll and Dr. Mary Brannock; her grandchildren, Mason Carroll and Griffin Carroll; her sister, Mary Lindsey, and brothers, Mark and William Landry; and her Cavapoo, Poppy Squash.
The family requests that in place of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society. The family is planning to host a celebration of life with details coming at a later time.
