Tony Wayne Hayes, Sr.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7 Tony Wayne Hayes, Sr., 60, Freemont Drive, Johnson City, peacefully went home to be with his Lord and savoir on Friday, March 30, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. In the comfort of his home and surrounded by his loved ones, he took his final journey in the embracing and loving arms of his heavenly father. Tony was born on February 17, 1947 in Concord, North Carolina to the late Reverend Johnny K. Hayes, Sr. and the late Pastor, Sara L. Hayes. His mother and father were the Founders and former Pastors of the Bible Church, 715 King Springs Road, Johnson City. When his illness allowed, Tony and Pat had most recently been attending Jonesborough Church of God. Tony?s family moved to Maple Street in Johnson City when he was 12 years old, and he resided here for the next 48 years. In his teenage year, he attended Science Hill High School and thoroughly enjoyed working on and playing around with old cars. In 1967 he met the love of his life and mother of his children, Patricia M. Goodwin. They were married on August 5, 1967 and remained united for nearly 40 years. Tony was a loving and devoted husband, father and his favorite title was 'Pappy'. Tony had many interest and hobbies, he volunteered to coach for his sons football and baseball teams in the late 1970?s and early 1980?s during which time he taught players to show sportsmanship and teamwork. He also was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed over the years, hunting, fishing, bird dogs, field trials, horses, camping, sports and spending time with his family, especially his Grandson, Dustin who was also his hunting and fishing buddy and his Granddaughters, Shelby and Marissa with whom he loved to go camping with. He was a past president of the Tri-Cities Bird dog club and vice-president of the East Tennessee Walking Horse Association. He was also a member of the Unaka Rod and Gun Club. Tony was loyal and dedicated employee at, Temple Inland, formerly Tri-State Containers, in Elizabethton, for nearly 38 years, in the Sales department. During his years of service he developed many friendships, with co-workers and clients alike. His high standards, work ethics and years of hard work made him successful in work and in life. Tony enjoyed using his vast knowledge and experience to help others achieve their goals and dreams. Survivors include: his cherished wife, Patricia 'Pat' Goodwin Hayes; his daughter and son-in-law, Tonya and Ricky Harrell of Gray; his son and daughter-in-law, Tony, Jr. and Melody Hayes of Fairview, TN; one extra special grandson, Dustin R. Harrell of Gray; two precious granddaughters, Marissa Ann and Shelby Grace Hayes of Fairview; a brother and sister-in-law, Johnny 'Sonny' and Becky Hayes of Johnson City; a sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Gary Hyder of Johnson City, his mother-in-law, Ruth Goodwin Bowling of North Carolina; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lois and Ron Brady and Donna and Fred Mitchell all of Morristown, Jerry, Willa Mae and Gary Goodwin of North Carolina, a special canine compainion Roseanne 'Rosie' Hayes, Special 2nd mother figure, Lois Milam, North Carolina, special daughter figure, Carla Jones Harrison, 'Golden Girls,' Louise Grindstaff and Pauline Title and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Services: receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 2, 2007 @ Morris - Baker and at his home at 1011 Freemont Drive at all other times. Funeral Service: 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2007 @ Bible Church at 715 King Springs Road, Johnson City, TN. Burial to follow at Roselawn Cemetery on the Erwin Highway in Johnson City. Officiants will be Pastor Eddie Ledford and Rev. Jeffery 'Bo' Barnes. Music will be provided by Sandra Keller and Deenie Ledford. Active pallbearers will be: Ricky Harrell, Robert Hughes, David Woodby, Eddie 'Buddy' Combs, Johnny Hayes, Jr. and Timmy Whitehead.. Honorary pallbearers will be: Ben Treadway, Harry Vines, Ron Brady, his co-workers at Temple-Inland, clients and friends at Tennessee Eastman, American Water Heaters, Quebecor and all his other clients and friends. Special thanks to Shirley and Mike Caudel for words of encouragement, Susie and Matthew Wagner, Dr. Kincaid and the 'Chemo Nurses' and staff at Mcleod Cancer and Blood Center, Doctors Schmidt and Mehta, JCMCH home health and hospice and all the other medical professionals who were involved, for being so kind and caring to our beloved husband, father and 'Pappy'.
