Walter L. Garland, 86, of 1307 E. Chilhowie Avenue, Johnson City died Monday, April 21, 2008 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Garland was a native of Unicoi County, TN and had lived in Johnson City since the 1950s. He was a son of the late Herbert and Mary Stevens Garland. Mr. Garland was retired from Summers Hardware as a Trucking Supervisor with over thirty years of service. He was a Army veteran of WW II serving in Normandy. Mr. Garland was an active member of the Roan Hill Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon, Trustee and Choir member. Mr. Garland is preceded in death by: his parents; three brothers, Lester Garland, Frank Garland, and Velmer Garland; three sisters, Vergie G. Hughes, Jennie Garland and Addie G. Taylor. Survivors include: his loving wife of sixty-two years, Anna Belle McCourry Garland of the home; one brother, Earnest Ray Garland of Clintwood, VA; special nieces and nephews, Debbie M. Peterson of Green Mountain, NC, Donna M. Miller of Erwin, TN, Larry McCourry of Clifton, VA, Boyd Garland and Joe Garland, both of Erwin, TN,Teresa Lynn Maden,Brenda Coleman, Deanna Byers and Family. A graveside funeral service for Walter L. Garland will be conducted at 2:30 PM Thursday, April 24, 2008 at the Roselawn Memorial Park. Rev. Gene Cornett will officiate. Music will be by Carolyn Cornett. Active pallbearers will be Donald E. Peterson, Lawrence Douglas McCourry, Shannon Byers, Charles Pearson, Larry McCourry, Spencer Maden, Andrew Byers, Rick Miller and Allen Taylor. Honorary Pallbearers will be J.D. Comer and Lewis Johnson. The family will receive friends at Morris-Baker from 1 to 2 PM Thursday. The procession will then go to the cemetery.
