Wannetta Elizabeth Riggs Johnson, age 98, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2020 at the Johnson City Medical Center.
Wannetta was born on November 14, 1921 to Grover Clarence Riggs and Minnie Lee Gregory Riggs in Wapello, Iowa. Wannetta resided in East Tennessee since 1935. She earned her bachelor's degree from ETSU to be a teacher. She retired in 1990 from the Johnson City school system after being an art teacher at Liberty Bell Middle School.
Wannetta was a member of the Red Hat Society and she and her husband, Harry, were members of the Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society and Museum. They were also active members of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, Wannetta was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Barry Johnson in 2000; a son, Harry Riggs Johnson; a sister, Nellie Mayfield; and a brother, Cecil Riggs.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Eric Johnson; sister, Polly May; several nieces and nephews; and special caregiver, Tammy Saults of Home Instead Senior Care.
The family will hold a private funeral service officiated by Rev. Michael Lester. This service will be posted at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, on this page for public viewing. A note will be attached to a balloon that will be displayed at the time of service to represent your presence. There will be a private interment at Mountain Home National Cemetery.
