Mr. William Brown Umbarger, 89, Johnson City, passed away Saturday, October 6, 2018, at Cornerstone Village, where he had resided for the past year. He was a resident of Johnson City and attended city schools. Bill joined the US Coast Guard as a Merchant Marine, and later worked for Inter-Mountain Telephone Company before traveling the world as an engineer for Western Electric Co, an AT&T company. He was seriously injured at Las Cruces, NM in a work- related automobile crash in 1964. Much of his last 54 years were spent in differing states of health because of his paralysis from his injuries. Despite his setbacks in life, he tried to remain positive and a good example for his family and friends. His favorite past time was enjoying some mobility with his electric wheelchair and reading, especially his Bible. He was a charter member of North Johnson City Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Loyd and Edna Umbarger, Bill was preceded in death by: his dear wife, Ada; a son, Michael; and brothers, Edward, Hobart and Loyd Jr. Survivors include: his sons, David Steve Umbarger and wife Rita, Mark Alan Umbarger and wife Jamie, Joe Lyndon Umbarger and wife Denise; six grandchildren, Aaron, Aimee, Brandon, Daniel, Lexie, and Taylor; brother, Ray Umbarger and wife Vivian; sister, Ruth Bordeaux; and many nieces and nephews. The family of William B Umbarger will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at Morris Baker Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM with Pastor Mike Anglin officiating. The committal service will immediately follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
