William E. ?Bill' Wood, 97, Johnson City, ended his journey on this Earth on Sunday, December 27, 2015. Born in Roanoke, Virginia, he was the son of the late Robert Otis and Ruth Stiff Wood. He graduated from high school as the class valedictorian and began his career as a draftsman; it was during that time that he joined the U.S. Navy. After completing his service, he worked at the Johnson City Foundry, working there longer than any other employee. Upon his retirement he subcontracted part time with Henard Metal Fabricators for nearly 30 years. He was the oldest living member of First United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Wood, Jr. and David Wood; and four sisters, Iva Ruth Reece, Gloria Rawls, Joann Malloch, and Betty Jo McAmis. Survivors include: his wife of 65 years, Carolyn Wood; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Roger ?Hoppy' Wexler; two granddaughters, Sarah Wexler and Laura Wexler; one sister, Mary Lou Lewis; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children. Bill never met a stranger; he would talk to anyone who would listen. He enjoyed spending hours reading the newspaper every day from cover to cover and successfully completing the puzzles. The family wishes to thank the staff of Broadmore Senior Living and Mountain States Hospice for their help and support. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 900 Spring St., Johnson City, TN 37604, or a charity of one?s choice. The family of Bill Wood will receive friends from 8:30 AM until 9:30 AM Saturday, January 2, 2015 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The committal service will follow immediately after the visitation with Rev. Jane Taylor officiating.
