Elder Companions (Dedicated to Bill and Betty Miller) In sunset amber, Baffled in untamed growth, I search through woods For something of enlightened meaning. But all I come upon are branches Bent, bowed, and broken. An unkempt sight, eerily familiar. In exploration, it seems To be a skipping record repeating. So many lives tangled in circling disarray. There must be something more musical, Beyond these jaunty, melodic phrases. While these thoughts emerge, I exit the forest to an open meadow. Out ahead, two trees stand. Side by side, founded in experience. The King and Queen of the field. 67 years and counting. Together enduring it all. Their roots must now be so intertwined, That neither would stay as sturdy Without the other to lean on. It hits me like the sun hits the horizon. My eyes unveiled like the stars peeking out of dusk sky. This is what I long for. Fidelity so simple, Nothing can touch it. I know from just noticing these elder companions, Only this ultimate devotion will do. -Alicia Miller Mr. William Brock Miller, Johnson City, Tennessee died on November 8, 2014 at home. He was born on December 18,1922, in Sparta, Tennessee the son of the late Thomas Butler and Annie Mae Miller and grew up in Sparta, Tennessee. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-seven years, Betty B. Miller, October 30, 2014, his son James William Miller, of Johnson City in 2012; sister, Ann Hughes, and brothers Thomas Lafayette Miller and Roberts Southard Miller and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Mr. Miller was a veteran of WWII, received a Bachelors degree in Accounting from Tennessee Technological University and a MBA from East Tennessee State University where he was Director of Budget and Planning and 45 years of service in State Government. He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church for fifty years where he was involved in many different groups. He was a member of the Solon Gentry Sunday School Class, and was a member of the Kiwanis Club. He loved to travel, and enjoyed and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. Surviving are his daughter Elizabeth Ann Miller of Nashville, Tennessee, son Robert Stephen Miller of Johnson City. Also surviving are three granddaughters: Alicia Dawn Miller, Jada Diana Miller and Melissa Ann Miller, all of Johnson City; nieces Patricia A. Brady of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Sue Whitehurst of Richmond, Virginia. A celebration of Life service will be held Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church at 3:00 P.M. with Rev. Michael Lester, Rev. Mark Gooden, and Rev. Douglas Grove-DeJarnett officiating. Members of the Solon Gentry Sunday School Class and Circle 9 of the United Methodist Women will be honorary attendants. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Interment will be Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. The Boone Dam Post # 4933 and the Tennessee National Guard will accord military honors. Ministers, family and friends are requested to meet at the funeral home by 9:15 AM Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made to Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 E. Market Street, Johnson City, TN 37601.
