William Glenn Dills

June 27, 1926 — December 31, 2023

Johnson City

William “Glenn” Dills, 97, Johnson City, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2023.

He was born in Asheville, NC, the son of the late Andrew Cicero Dills, Sr. & Rosala Mae Woody Dills. His family moved to Johnson City in 1939, and he attended Science Hill High School. In October 1944, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. Glenn served in Europe during World War II, receiving a bronze star citation. He later served in the Pacific during August and September 1945. Glenn was recalled on reserve duty during the Korean War (September 1949 - January 1953). In March 1990, he retired from the TN Department of Transportation, Bureau of Highways, having served as an engineering technologist. Glenn was a member of Central Baptist Church and the William Rigell Sunday School Class. While at Central, he actively served many years in the Hands Around the Table ministry and as an usher.

He was preceded in death by his wife, June Payton Dills, in April 2017, with whom he shared almost 70 years of marriage; his parents, a brother (Andrew C. Dills, Jr.), and a sister (Cleo Dills Miller). He is survived by his son, Timothy Glenn Dills. Glenn also leaves behind many wonderful friends in the neighborhood, his church family, his Sunday School class, and in the community.

Glenn treasured time with his wife and son, and they enjoyed many wonderful trips together. During his working life, he enjoyed participating in local bowling leagues, and he made many lifelong friends from that experience. Along with June, he served in the Meals on Wheels delivering meals to shut-ins,

participated in the Loaves and Fishes program for several years, and rang bells for the Salvation Army at Christmastime. Following June’s passing, Glenn and Tim were blessed with over six years together, which they both cherished. All who met him appreciated his warm smile, outgoing personality, and

commitment to service.

The family would like to thank Dr. Hadi El Bazouni and the wonderful nurses/staff of the ER and Third Floor at Franklin Woods Hospital for their gentle care during his last week of life. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Baptist Church, 300 North Roan Street, Johnson City, TN 37601.

The family of William Glenn Dills will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 pm Thursday, January 4, 2024, at Central Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 6:00 pm with Dr. Tommy Hood, Rev. Tony Martin, and Rev. Gene Elliott officiating. Family and friends are asked to meet at Monte Vista Memorial Park on Friday, January 5th, for a 10:00 am graveside service.
