William Glen Shanks

February 2, 1925 — February 13, 2016

Mr. William Glen Shanks, 91, of Johnson City passed away Saturday, February 13, 2016, in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Nursing Home, Mountain Home, Tennessee. Glen was born in Greene County, Tennessee, and a resident of the upper East Tennessee area for most of his life. He was the son of the late Elbert Ruble Shanks and Letha ODell Williams Shanks. Glen graduated from Chuckey High School in Greene County, TN and from East Tennessee State College. He was retired from Piedmont Airlines as a cargo manager after thirty-seven years of service. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII and in the European Theater where he was awarded two bronze stars. He was a lifelong member of the V.F.W. Post 1990 in Greenville, Tenn. Glen was a member of Munsey Memorial Methodist Church and a past member of Wheeler United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys Burgess Shanks; brother, A.J. Shanks, sister, Thelma Bowman, brothers, Carroll Shanks, Donald Shanks, and Wayne Shanks. Survivors include his wife of twenty-five years, June Ellis Shanks, three children; Lanette Ward, Atlanta, Ga., Darrell Shanks (Debbie), Christiansburg, Va, Patricia Cahalan, (Chris Thompson) Floyd, Va.; three Grandchildren- Ben Ward (Hiro)- children (Shion, Hugh), Emily Golden (Brendan)- children (Keira, Brendan), Noah Shanks (Jennifer)- children (Austin, Aiden, Aubrey); two stepdaughters- Jamie Ellis Rowan (Pat) and Melonie Ellis Norris (Paul); Grandchildren- Amy, Christine, and Jennifer Rowan. Jason Norris, Jacob Norris (Emily)- children- Ellis Claire, Nash, Ashley Norris, Josh Norris( Stephie)- child- Avery; several nieces and nephews. The family of Mr. William Glen Shanks will receive friends from 1 to 2 PM Wednesday, February 17, 2016, in the Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 2 PM with Rev Michael Lester officiating. The graveside committal service will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The Boone Dam Post # 4933 will accord military honors. The family would like to thank the staff and Hospice volunteers at the VA Long Term Care Facility at Mountain Home for the kindness and excellent care they provided to Glen and his family.
