How Morris-Baker Is Protecting the Health of Its Client Families

March 17, 2020

Morris-Baker understands that, in the fast-changing world of the current COVID-19 pandemic, members of our community will experience loss and may not be aware of current CDC guidelines regarding funerals. Morris-Baker will keep this page updated with the most current information available to us.

As of March 16, 2020, the CDC offers the following guidance:

  • No gatherings of 50 people or more should be held for the next eight weeks.
  • Embalming can be conducted.
  • A funeral or visitation service can be held – including those who have died of COVID-19.
  • There is currently no known risk associated with being in the same room at a funeral or visitation service with the body of someone who died of COVID-19.
  • Decedents with COVID-19 can be buried or cremated.

Morris-Baker currently offers the following services—many of which are what the CDC suggests—to protect attendees:

  • Services in our Dogwood Chapel may be webcast for those who cannot attend.
  • When you arrive for an event, a member of our staff will open the door for you.
  • Hand sanitizer is placed throughout our facility.
  • Online tribute pages offer an alternative to register book signatures.
  • Members of our staff will gladly sign a register book on your behalf.
  • Arrangement conferences can be conducted over the phone or using a meeting software.
  • Our chapels offer adjoining family rooms to allow social distancing.
  • To meet CDC guidelines for group size, services will be staggered throughout the day and facility.
  • We follow CDC guidelines to clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks. During scheduled events, common touchpoints are cleaned regularly with EPA approved cleaner.

Morris-Baker will continue to monitor developments as they arise and will follow all new guidelines that are directed.

Our family and staff are here to serve, protect and honor each family as we have been for over 100 years. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel to email us or call (423) 282-1521.

When Imelia McAllister was studying criminal justice at East Tennessee State University, she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do after graduation. One of the professional fields that interested her was funeral service, so she began exploring it. “I was looking into mortuary school,” Imelia says, “but I didn’t want to rush into it because I wanted to be positive that it was the right step for me.” When Imelia saw the job posting in front office administration at Morris-Baker, she decided to apply. “I liked the fact that it was a family-owned business, and everyone was so nice when I came to interview,” she says. “I started here with reception hoping to see how I would feel about becoming a funeral director.” Imelia did see. As the months passed—and her skills and knowledge deepened—she learned a lot more about the field. “I decided that becoming a director wasn't for me, but I have also discovered that I enjoy working on the administrative side and helping out in that way.” She has also discovered how different a funeral service staff can be in contrast to the stereotype. “You see all these portrayals of people in the funeral business as being very stuffy and strict, but everyone that I have talked to in this business is so kind and funny and just a delight to be around,” she says. She adds, “Everyone here is so helpful. They really make me feel like there are no stupid questions.” There never will be. We’re happy that Imelia came to Morris-Baker and that although path might not have been the one she thought she would be on, that she’s on a path with us.
